Ingredients

Protein and Pasta:

  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cubed
  • 12 ounces fettuccine or penne pasta

Seasonings:

  • 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 bell pepper (red, yellow, or green), diced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Garnishes:

  • Fresh parsley, chopped
  • Additional Parmesan cheese

Preparation

Step 1: Cook the Pasta
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of the pasta water, then drain and set aside.

Step 2: Season the Shrimp and Chicken
In a bowl, combine shrimp and chicken with Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Toss to coat evenly.

Step 3: Sear the Shrimp and Chicken
Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the chicken pieces for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and fully cooked. Remove and set aside. In the same skillet, add the shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until pink and opaque. Remove and set aside with the chicken.

Step 4: Sauté the Vegetables
In the same skillet, add the remaining olive oil and butter. Sauté the diced onion, garlic, and bell pepper for 3-4 minutes until softened and fragrant.

Step 5: Create the Sauce
Pour in the chicken broth, scraping the bottom of the skillet to deglaze. Stir in the heavy cream and Parmesan cheese. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened. Add red pepper flakes if you prefer more heat.

Step 6: Combine Pasta, Protein, and Sauce
Return the cooked shrimp and chicken to the skillet, tossing them in the sauce. Add the cooked pasta and reserved pasta water if needed to achieve your desired consistency. Mix until everything is well coated in the creamy Cajun sauce.

Step 7: Serve and Garnish
Transfer the pasta to plates or bowls. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and additional Parmesan cheese.

Variations

  • Vegetarian Option: Omit the shrimp and chicken, and add roasted vegetables like zucchini, mushrooms, or broccoli.
  • Spicier Version: Add extra Cajun seasoning or a dash of cayenne pepper.
  • Seafood Twist: Include scallops or crab meat for a luxurious touch.

Cooking Notes

  • Ensure the shrimp are cooked just until pink to avoid a rubbery texture.
  • Use freshly grated Parmesan cheese for the best flavor.
  • Adjust the cream and broth ratio to make the sauce as thick or thin as you prefer.

Serving Suggestions

  • Pair this dish with a crisp green salad and garlic bread for a complete meal.
  • Serve with a glass of chilled white wine like Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay.

Tips

  • Prep all ingredients before starting to cook for a smoother process.
  • Double the sauce recipe if you love extra creaminess.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
