These Greek-inspired tacos combine warm pita bread with juicy seasoned meat, crisp Mediterranean vegetables, creamy tzatziki, feta, and fresh herbs. They’re quick, flavorful, and perfect for an easy family dinner.

Ingredients
For the Seasoned Meat
1 lb (450 g) ground beef or ground lamb
1 tbsp olive oil
1 small yellow onion, finely diced
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp paprika
½ tsp ground cumin
½ tsp dried thyme
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper
¼ tsp red pepper flakes, optional
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
For the Tzatziki Sauce
1 cup plain Greek yogurt
½ medium cucumber, finely grated
1 garlic clove, minced
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped
1 tbsp fresh mint, chopped
¼ tsp salt
⅛ tsp black pepper
For the Toppings
6 small pita breads
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
1 small cucumber, diced
½ small red onion, thinly sliced
½ cup crumbled feta cheese
¼ cup Kalamata olives, sliced
¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped
Fresh dill or mint
Lemon wedges
Instructions

  1. Make the Tzatziki

Grate the cucumber using the large holes of a box grater.

Place it in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and squeeze out as much liquid as possible.

In a bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, cucumber, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, dill, mint, salt, and pepper.

Mix well and refrigerate for at least 15–20 minutes so the flavors can develop.

  1. Cook the Meat

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add the diced onion and cook for 3–4 minutes, until softened.

Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.

Add the ground beef or lamb.

Cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking the meat apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and cooked through.

Drain excess fat if necessary.

  1. Season the Meat

Add oregano, paprika, cumin, thyme, salt, black pepper, and optional red pepper flakes.

Stir well and cook for another 1–2 minutes so the spices become fragrant.

Remove from the heat and stir in fresh lemon juice.

Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.

  1. Prepare the Vegetables

While the meat cooks, prepare the toppings.

Slice the tomatoes, dice the cucumber, thinly slice the red onion, chop the herbs, and slice the olives.

Keep everything ready for assembly.

  1. Warm the Pita

Warm the pita breads in a dry skillet for about 20–30 seconds per side.

You can also wrap them in foil and warm them in a 350°F (175°C) oven for about 5 minutes.

Don’t overheat them or they may become difficult to fold.

  1. Assemble the Greek Tacos

Place one warm pita on a plate.

Add a generous spoonful of seasoned meat down the center.

Top with:

Cherry tomatoes
Cucumber
Red onion
Kalamata olives
Feta
Fresh parsley

Drizzle generously with tzatziki.

Add fresh dill or mint and a squeeze of lemon.

Fold the pita like a taco and serve immediately.

Optional Mediterranean Extras

For even more flavor, add:

Roasted red peppers
Shredded lettuce
Pickled red onions
Artichoke hearts
Hummus
Crumbled goat cheese
Chopped pepperoncini
A sprinkle of sumac

Recipe Q&A

Q: Can I use chicken instead of beef or lamb?
Yes. Ground chicken or finely chopped chicken works very well with the same Mediterranean seasoning.

Q: Can I use ground turkey?
Absolutely. Ground turkey makes a leaner option. Add a little extra olive oil to keep it moist.

Q: What kind of pita works best?
Small or medium soft pita bread works best because it can be folded around the filling without breaking.

Q: Can I use naan instead of pita?
Yes. Naan is thicker and softer, so it makes a delicious alternative.

Q: Can I make the tzatziki ahead of time?
Yes. Tzatziki can be prepared 1–2 days ahead and kept refrigerated in an airtight container.

Q: Why do I need to squeeze the cucumber?
Cucumber contains a lot of water. Removing excess liquid prevents the tzatziki from becoming watery.

Q: Can I use dried dill instead of fresh?
Yes. Use about 1 teaspoon dried dill in place of the fresh dill.

Q: Can I add hummus?
Definitely. Spread a thin layer of hummus on the pita before adding the meat for extra creaminess and flavor.

Q: Can I make these tacos spicy?
Yes. Add red pepper flakes, cayenne, chopped jalapeño, or a drizzle of spicy chili oil.

Q: Can I prepare the meat ahead of time?
Yes. Cooked seasoned meat can be refrigerated for 3–4 days in an airtight container and reheated before assembling.

Q: Can I make these for meal prep?
Yes, but store the meat, vegetables, pita, and tzatziki separately. Assemble just before eating to keep the pita from becoming soggy.

Q: Can I make them gluten-free?
Yes. Use certified gluten-free pita or another gluten-free flatbread.

Q: What vegetables can I add?
Lettuce, roasted peppers, shredded cabbage, cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, spinach, and pickled onions all work well.

Q: Can I add nuts?
Yes. Toasted pistachios or chopped almonds can be sprinkled over the tacos for crunch. If you add nuts, the dish is no longer nut-free.

Q: How long does leftover tzatziki last?
Keep it refrigerated and use within 3–4 days for the best quality.

Q: Can I freeze the assembled tacos?
It’s not recommended because the fresh vegetables and tzatziki become watery after freezing. Freeze the cooked meat separately if desired.

Q: What can I serve alongside Greek tacos?
Greek salad, roasted potatoes, lemon rice, hummus, grilled vegetables, or a simple cucumber-tomato salad make excellent sides.
